Green Smoothies

This was a big step for me.  As most know, I hate all things green. Lately I have really felt the need to make sure I am getting the proper nutrients, as most picky eaters do not, and was compelled to concoct this vibrant smoothie in hopes for the best.  The sight of it is scary I know, but it truly taste better than it looks and I have found a new way to get those not so tasty greens into my system.

Neon green or not, there is no arguing the true benefits of getting your greens in each day.  They are the most concentrated source of nutrition of any food. Among the many benefits these leafy greens can help with arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis and arterial plaque. To read more about the many reasons you should make sure you are getting that leafy goodness in your body go to:http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/lowcarbsuperfoods/a/greensnutrition.htm
Or read about how leafy greens helped this doctor get out of a wheel chair and feeling 100 times better:

Here is one version of many different combinations you can try:
 1 banana
1 c frozen pineapple
1 c almond milk
2 c fresh spinach
1 packet of stevia in the raw or one tbls of honey if you like it a little sweeter

Blend well in a blender. If you need to drink it out of a closed container so the green does not freak you out...it is ok! Enjoy.

Green Goodness Product Review

For those who know me, you know I hate all things green.  I have really been struggling with this lately.  I want to like them (green veggies that hold all that goodness) but I truly hate them.  I was lurking in the produce section one day trying to convince myself to buy more veggies when I stumbled upon this gem.

Bolthouse Farms Green Goodness

It holds the nutrition of 3 3/4 serving of fruits and veggies in one bottle. Upon looking at this I was scared.  It is VERY green.  I took a leap of faith and brought it home hoping for the best, and I was pleasantly surprised.  Green Goodness tastes quite a bit like green apples (which I can tolerate) and not at all like spinach that is mixed in with it.  My husband Daniel tried this as well and enjoyed it!  In fact, I came home yesterday with 2 more bottles from the grocery store and he stole one! I am happy to share my clean eating with him. ; )

Each bottle varies in price but averages around $2.50-$3 if you buy it in the small serving size.  They do come in bigger bottles like orange juice but I prefer the "on the go" usefulness of this size.  If you are looking to add a little green to your diet I would highly recommend Green Goodness!
Enjoy!

Meal Replacement Smoothies

A lot of talk has been going around about meal replacement smoothies for some time.  My husband and I had set weight goals for ourselves and were looking to find healthy things to do to aid us in loosing weight.  Over time I will be sharing some recipes that I have concocted but first I wanted to share a few tips with you that I have learned along the way.  Eating these smoothies for two of my meals out of the day,  along with moderate exercise, I met my weight goal!

First: *a meal replacement smoothie only does its job if you keep it what it is, a meal replacement.  It is not to go along side a big plate of spaghetti.
 *  Exercise is a MUST for healthy dieting.
*Processed foods and chemically made food should always be eaten in moderation. This is a very important tip because most "diet" foods have artificially made ingredients: mostly artificial sweeteners. I could write a whole page about this but just know that IT IS NOT HEALTHY to consume astpartame (sweet n' low) or sucalose (splenda) on a daily or twice daily basis.  If you question this, google the proper names and read the sites that are not funded by the artificial sweetener company, government or pharmaceutical companies, because these sites have dollar signs in mind above your health.
*to feel full and continue to have energy until your next meal, you must have protein in your smoothie.
*lastly, if your goal is to loose weight, you need to stay on track.  weigh your self every morning to stay motivated.  Don't get discouraged, just keep going.

What you need:

*Natural Brand Soy Protein from GNC.  I tried several whey and soy proteins before I decided that this one was the best.  It is only $10 and 60 calories per scoop.  Plus, it is ALL NATURAL!

*Your favorite frozen fruits.  We always keep stock of fresh bannanas and sometimes fresh strawberries but I find it much easier to keep a nice assortment of frozen fruits such as: mango, pineapple, blueberries, dark cherries, strawberries, etc.

* Vanilla extract ( I find a small splash of this makes every thing come together very nicely, but I do have a nice stock of this from Honduras)

* Stevia in the Raw.  Stevia is the only sweetener that is not artificially or chemically made.  Note: I have heard but not researched that Truvia and others claiming to use stevia leaf also add chemically processed ingredients.  Always read labels.  I stick with "in the raw" packet size.

* 35 calorie almond milk

If you keep these ingredients on hand, you will always have a great breakfast or lunch.  BTW: you need a blender.
